Overview
Students are expected to score in the “Meets Expectations” category. If any category score is “Below Expectations” OR two or more categories are “Approaching Expectations”, the project will be considered failing.
Rubric
Research and Preparation
- Exceeds Expectations: In addition to the requirements below, the student research is thoroughly exhausted, including:
- A deep dive into the company’s website, LinkedIn, and other resources
- Makes tailored outreach attempts to multiple employees or hiring managers
- A clear understanding of the company’s business model, technology stack, and strategic direction
- Meets Expectations:
- Student submits all six deliverables on time
- All application materials are tailored to the specific role
- Student makes connections between their work history and values to the needs of the company and the role for which they are interviewing
- The research is answered using specific examples and details
- Approaching Expectations:
- Student submits all six deliverables on time, but the resume and cover letter are not tailored to the company or role
- OR the research is not thorough and lacks specific examples and details
- OR the student is unable to make a strong connection between their work history and values to the needs of the company and the role for which they are interviewing.
- Below Expectations:
- Student fails to provide one or more of the six deliverables on time.
Behavioral Interview
- Exceeds Expectations:
- Student gives strong and specific examples following a STAR-like pattern 100% of the time (when applicable)
- Details exemplify the student’s strengths and opportunities
- Student is able to make strong connections from their experience to the company or job description
- Meets Expectations:
- Student gives strong examples when answering questions and follows a STAR-like pattern at least 90% of the time (when applicable)
- Enough detail is given to satisfy what is being asked without unrelated information
- Student is able to relate their experience to the company or job description
- Approaching Expectations:
- Student is able to answer questions while following a STAR-like pattern at least 70% of the time
- Answers generally do not relate to the company or job description
- Answers may lack clarity or relevant examples
- Below Expectations:
- Student is unable to answer questions effectively. This could look like:
- Not answering at all
- Answering a significantly different question than was asked
- Lack of cohesion in storytelling (rambling or jumping around)
- Follows STAR pattern less than 70% of the time
- Student is unable to answer questions effectively. This could look like:
Technical Interview
- Exceeds Expectations:
- Student gives strong and specific examples or definitions with accurate technical terminology when answering questions
- Student is able to relate their technical experience or interests to the company or job description.
- Student effectively uses Graceful Exit strategies but generally does not need to
- Meets Expectations:
- Student uses accurate technical terminology when answering questions
- Enough detail is given to satisfy what is being asked
- Student effectively uses Graceful Exit strategies when faced with questions they do not know the answers to, including behaviors like note taking, asking for clarification, or offering later follow-up.
- Approaching Expectations:
- Student gives short answers that miss a few specific details or examples
- Answers may lack technical clarity or strong technical terminology but are generally correct
- Below Expectations:
- Student is unable to answer questions effectively
- This could look like:
- Answering incorrectly or not at all (“I don’t know”)
- Answering a significantly different question than was asked
- Using little or incorrect technical terminology
